CARLSBAD, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 9, 2002--Callaway Golf (NYSE: ELY) Staff Professional Annika Sorenstam won the Williams Championship yesterday. While the victory is Sorenstam's ninth worldwide win this year, it is her first with Callaway Golf's hot new prototype Great Big Bertha(R) II Pro Series Titanium Driver. In her first tournament since switching to the new driver, Sorenstam led the field in driving distance average at 284.5 yards -- an increase of 22 yards over her driving distance average prior to the event -- and rolled to an impressive four-stroke victory. This is the second tour victory for the prototype Great Big Bertha II Titanium Driver, following a win at the NEC Invitational three weeks ago.

"I loved the Great Big Bertha II right away," said Sorenstam, explaining her decision to switch to the new driver in the midst of another spectacular season. "It's given me some extra distance, which is a lot of fun. I'm probably carrying it at least 10 yards farther -- I mean, this week I had some drives that I just couldn't believe. It's a lot of fun. Now I know how Tiger Woods feels every week when he's 40 yards ahead of the other players. It's a wonderful feeling. I think this new Great Big Bertha II is the greatest driver Callaway Golf has ever made."

There were 34 prototype Great Big Bertha II Titanium Drivers used at the Williams Championship -- making it the No. 1 driver model in play -- compared to 31 total drivers for the nearest competitor. Overall, Callaway Golf had a total of 64 drivers in play at the event. In all, 116 players used the new driver across the PGA, Senior PGA, LPGA, Buy.com and PGA European tours combined last week -- the highest number to date for the prototype Great Big Bertha II Titanium Driver. Four of the top nine finishers at the Williams Championship used prototype Great Big Bertha II Titanium Drivers -- including Sorenstam and the second-place finisher -- and a total of nine golfers used the driver to earn top-10 finishes around the world yesterday.

Sorenstam's win at the Williams Championship is the 39th LPGA Tour victory of her illustrious career. Including the Compaq Open in Sweden two weeks ago, Sorenstam has now won the last two events in which she's played. She used a total of 11 Callaway Golf(R) clubs at the Williams Championship, including two Callaway Golf fairway woods, Steelhead(TM) X-14(R) Irons and an Odyssey(R) White Hot(R) "2-Ball" Putter. Sorenstam also used the HX(R) Red golf ball, registering the 11th win for Callaway Golf balls in 25 events on the LPGA Tour this year -- more than any other golf ball manufacturer. Nine of the top 13 finishers at the Williams Championship used Callaway Golf balls.

Callaway Golf balls were also victorious in Japan yesterday. Callaway Golf Ball Staff Professional Nobuhito Sato won the Japan Match Play Championship using the CTU 30(R) Red golf ball. This is Sato's third win of the year using the CTU 30 Red ball, and he leads the Japan Golf Tour (JGT) money list, although this was not an official JGT event. Callaway Golf balls have been used to win nine of the 17 official events on the Japan Golf Tour this season. The Match Play winner also used an Odyssey White Hot 5 Putter, marking an amazing 12 Odyssey Putter wins in the 17 events in Japan this year. The winner of the Bell Canadian Open also used an Odyssey Dual Force(R) Rossie(R) 2 Putter yesterday. After the three-victory weekend, Odyssey Golf leads all putter brands with 62 wins across the world's six major professional tours combined this year, compared with 42 for the nearest competitor.
