Sorenstam, Howell Win With Hot New Great Big Bertha II Titanium Driver; Three More Worldwide Tour Victories for Callaway Golf Balls

October 7, 2002 at 5:09 PM EDT

CARLSBAD, Calif., Oct 7, 2002 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Callaway Golf (NYSE: ELY) Staff Professionals Annika Sorenstam and Charles Howell III each scored landmark victories yesterday using the Company's new Great Big Bertha(R) II Titanium Driver. Sorenstam outdistanced the exclusive field at the Samsung World Championship by six strokes to earn her career-best ninth victory of the LPGA Tour season -- her 11th victory worldwide in 2002 -- while Howell surged to the first victory of his PGA Tour career at the Michelob Championship. The Great Big Bertha II Titanium Driver has now won seven tournaments in less than two months on the world's professional tours, including three wins over the last two weeks.

Sorenstam and Howell also used Callaway Golf's HX(R) Red golf ball in their victories, while Callaway Golf Ball Staff Professional Padraig Harrington won the Dunhill Links Championship using the CTU 30(R) Red golf ball -- giving the Company golf ball victories on three of the five major professional tours that were in action last week. Callaway Golf balls have now been used to win 50 tournaments across the PGA, Senior PGA, LPGA, Buy.com, PGA European and Japan Golf tours combined this year -- placing the Company behind only Titleist in golf ball wins and well ahead of the third-place manufacturer, which has just 13 wins this year.

Sorenstam's amazing record-shattering pace continued with her 22-under-par 266 at the Samsung World Championship. Among the marks she set this week:

  • Bettered the previous Samsung tournament record by a staggering eight strokes
  • Extended her record for most money won in a single LPGA Tour season to $2,374,000 -- more than $1.1 million ahead of her nearest competitor
  • Equaled Nancy Lopez's single-season mark of nine wins in 1978 and kept alive her chance to tie or break the legendary Mickey Wright's "untouchable" record of 13 wins set during the 1963 season.
  • Finished in the top 10 for the 18th time in 20 starts this year.
  • Lowered her stroke average to 68.55, on pace to break her record of 69.42 set last year.
  • Recorded her 40th career victory

Sorenstam used 11 Callaway Golf(R) clubs, including a Great Big Bertha II Pro Series Titanium Driver, Steelhead(TM) X-14(R) Irons and an Odyssey(R) White Hot(R) "2-Ball" Putter, along with the HX Red golf ball. She averaged 284.5 yards in driving distance for the event, more than 20 yards more than her season average of 264.4 yards prior to the event. Sorenstam shot four rounds in the 60s at Hiddenbrooke Golf Club, including a bogey-free 65 in the final round. So far in her nine LPGA wins this year, Sorenstam is 141 under par! Three of the top four finishers at the event -- Sorenstam, Cristie Kerr and Rosie Jones -- used Callaway Golf balls.

Howell shot a final-round 67 -- the best score of the day -- to win the Michelob Championship, hitting 15 of 18 greens and 11 of 14 fairways on the day. The 2000 NCAA Championship winner used a combination of long-ball power and short-game skill to win the event. Howell's pressure-packed drive on the final hole found the fairway 311 yards from the tee, helping him make a two-putt par for a two-stroke victory. "That's probably the best drive I've ever hit, considering the circumstances," Howell said. Meanwhile, he ranked second at the event in both putts per round and putts per green in regulation while avoiding a single three-putt over 72 holes.

Howell relied exclusively on Callaway Golf clubs and balls for his first professional victory. He used 14 Callaway Golf clubs, including a Great Big Bertha II Titanium Driver, Steelhead III 3-wood, Big Bertha 2-iron, Steelhead X-14 Pro Series Irons, two Chrome-finish Callaway Golf Forged Wedges and an Odyssey White Hot 4 Putter, along with the HX Red golf ball.

Across the Atlantic, Harrington won the Dunhill Links Championship after a two-hole playoff with Callaway Golf Staff Professional Eduardo Romero. Both players finished regulation play at 19-under-par 269 on the Old Course at St. Andrews. The winner used an Odyssey White Hot "2-Ball" Putter to sink a 20-foot birdie putt and force the playoff, then rolled in a 12-foot birdie putt on the second extra hole for the victory. Four of the top five finishers at the event used Odyssey White Hot Putters. This is the second consecutive year that the Odyssey White Hot "2-Ball" Putter has provided a dramatic finish at the Dunhill Links Championship. Callaway Golf Staff Professional Paul Lawrie won the event last year after holing a 40-foot birdie putt through the "Valley of Sin" with his Odyssey White Hot "2-Ball" Putter -- a putt that was named 2001 Shot of the Year on the PGA European Tour.

An Odyssey White Hot Putter was also in the hands of the winning golfer at the Buy.com Monterey Peninsula Classic. The event's winner used an Odyssey White Hot 8 Putter in his wire-to-wire victory. All told, Odyssey Putters were used to win four of the five events contested across the world's major professional tours yesterday. Odyssey Putters have now been used to win 72 times across the world's six major professional tours combined this year, compared with 47 wins for the nearest competitor.
